Chapter Eleven
Lola
Hunter isnât a grouch. Okay, he can be grumpy, and his world isnât over-populated with unicorns, rainbows, and puppies, but heâsâ¦okay.
More than okay.
Heâs super, super fine.
Heâs also more than a little bit funny when he lets himself relax. He makes me feel off-balance, too, because when Iâm around him I find myself enjoying his company so much that sometimes I even forget about our kiss. And thatâs kind of like forgetting about a major historical event. If there were a top ten list for kisses, he and I would be up there because that was the Gettysburg of kisses.
Since most summer camps include a sports componentâalthough admittedly my entire summer camp knowledge comes from binge watching the Parent Trap moviesâweâre walking vigorously on the shore of Big Bear Lake. Iâd like to say that weâre walking around the lake, but that would be overly ambitious. Weâve settled for covering a minute stretch of shore.
Big Bear Lakeâs shoreline stretches a whopping sixty-five miles. Covering even a third of that would result in heart failure on my part. Olivia, however, is disgustingly fit. She sets a brisk pace and appears to be enjoying her view of the lake. If I had to describe it, Iâd have to say water, water, trees, mountain, water. Itâs certainly pretty, although Iâd rather be admiring it from a nice boat or an Adirondack chair on a dock.
Olivia pokes me in the chest. âWhat are you thinking about?â
âNothing.â I plaster an innocent who-me? expression on my face. Iâve gotten really good at concealing my dirty thoughts about Hunter.
âBecause you look like you were thinking about something good. Cake? Or man candy? Because those are the only two things worthy of that expression.â
Maybe Iâm not so good after all. âScoutâs honor.â
Olivia nods. âThat answers my question. Man candy for the win.â
âThinking about man candy doesnât hurt. Iâm not doing any actual consuming.â Mostly. Kissing is like wine tasting. You swish the stuff around, let it coat your tongue so you can appreciate the flavor, and then you spit it out.
Olivia makes a sound of disapproval.
âYou just got out of a bad relationship. You canât leap feet-first into a new one, no matter how hot Hunter is.â
âSo true,â I sigh.
Olivia looks at me and doesnât miss a beat. âOkay. So you totally can, but as your friend, Iâm here to remind you of all the reasons why you shouldnât.â
âRemind me.â I groan because Olivia walks fast. It might be slower to run. She, however, has more than enough breath to continue her relationship lecture.
âRebounds are bad for you. Having sex with Hunter isnât how you get over Dan, and itâs definitely not how you get revenge on your ex.â
âBut I think I might really be over Dan,â I say quietly.
âGood.â Olivia bumps my shoulder. âIâm not saying you never get back on the horse this summer, but I think you should be careful. Donât be impulsive. Really make sure before youââ
âHave sex?â
âWould you take the first slice of
